We are pleased to have now added a fifth book to The Woodbridge Museum mini-series. We are indebted to David Clarke of The Bull Hotel for writing this interesting booklet about such an important Woodbridge resident, John Grout.
Although John Grout wasn’t born in Woodbridge, he moved here as a very young man and eventually became landlord and owner of The Bull Inn. He was also a farmer, horse dealer and horse breeder of international repute.
He was known as “Honest John Grout” and when he died in 1886 such was the local affection for the man that church bells tolled, businesses closed their doors and thousands gathered to pay their respects.
