A Dip in the Deben

Before the Summer of 2026 becomes a distant memory, we thought you might like to see this picture of people enjoying the River Deben.

The photograph was taken from the Sutton side of the river probably before the Second World War.

As many of you will be aware, a ferry service operated from Woodbridge across to the bathing area on the Sutton side.

As this photograph shows it was a very popular past-time but sadly came to an end when the ferry ceased to operate in 1976.

We have a display in the museum about the ferry, the last ferryman Frank Knights and the fight to keep the ferry running.

Do come and have a look.

People lined up on a board jetting out onto the river, with other paddling in the distance
