Welcome

Woodbridge Museum is set in the historic Whisstocks area of the waterfront and is open to the public all year round.

The museum tells the story of Woodbridge from Saxon times to the present day, bringing together the people, places and events that have shaped the town across the centuries.

Staffed entirely by volunteers and funded through the kind donations of visitors and supporters, the museum is very much a community endeavour.

Inside you’ll discover historic artefacts, engaging displays, a family area and a small souvenir shop to help you explore more of Woodbridge and its past.

Soldier Mannequin

The mannequin displays the uniform of a soldier of G Troop Royal Horse Artillery in 1815.

G Troop left Woodbridge early 1815, moving to Colchester for a short time before embarking at Harwich on 10 April to join with the Duke of Wellington’s Army on the continent.

They were present at the Battle of Waterloo on 18 June 1815 under the command of Captain Cavalie Mercer RHA.

This replica uniform was made by the tailors of the Royal Horse Artillery at Colchester Barracks and presented to the museum.

Sutton Hoo Artifacts

Directly across the River Deben, opposite the museum, lies one of the most important archaeological sites in Britain – Sutton Hoo.

Famous for its Anglo-Saxon ship burial, Sutton Hoo revealed a rich and sophisticated world dating back over 1,300 years, transforming our understanding of early England.

At Woodbridge Museum, you can see some Sutton Hoo artefacts unearthed during the 1939 excavations, offering a fascinating glimpse into this remarkable story.
