The History of The Friends

The Friends of Woodbridge Museum were founded in 1979 to support the Museum financially and help secure its first home at 5a Market Hill. Money donated by the family of Ruby Hayward, whose collection inspired the Museum’s founding, enabled the purchase of a 99-year lease on the property.

Membership fees and fundraising events helped pay for early display cases, materials, souvenirs, and the Museum’s running costs, while also building funds for future premises. In 2018, proceeds from the Market Hill lease helped the Museum move to its new riverside home at Whisstock’s Place.

After reopening in 2019, the Museum quickly became self-sustaining through shop sales and donations. During the Covid-19 pandemic the Friends supported a full redesign to meet new safety standards, working with specialists, including advisors from the British Museum, to create the refreshed layout seen today. The Museum reopened in April 2021.

Why Your Support Matters

The Friends bring together people who care about Woodbridge’s heritage. Through events, talks, and trips, members enjoy learning more about the town while helping to sustain one of its most cherished landmarks.

Funds raised by the Friends support exhibitions, displays, and essential running costs, helping the Museum remain open and accessible to everyone.
